Greece asserts sovereignty amid tensions over Crete-Cyprus cable surveys
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis has issued a message of determination regarding Greece's sovereign rights in the Eastern Mediterranean. Speaking at a commemorative event in Piraeus, Gerapetritis stated that Greece is at the 'peak of its power' due to a strengthened economy, reinforced defense capabilities, and a highly respected diplomatic presence.
The statements come amid rising tensions with Turkey following the resumption of seabed surveys for the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), an electrical interconnection project between Crete and Cyprus. The surveys are being conducted by the French vessel 'Abeille Marengo' on behalf of the company Nexans. While Ankara has reacted strongly to these activities, Athens maintains that the work is an exercise of sovereign rights that does not require permission from any third party.
In a related development, the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, Dimitrios Houpis, outlined military priorities focusing on innovation, rapid mobility, and the development of integrated anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems to address modern conflict requirements.
