Greece bans electric scooters for under‑17s, raises fines and requires insurance
The Greek government has introduced a legislative proposal to tighten regulation of electric scooters. The draft law, presented to parliament, forbids anyone under 17 years of age from riding electric scooters on public roads, except for vehicles designed for disabled users.
The proposal also raises penalties: fines for riders exceeding 50 km/h jump from €30 to €350, and companies that sell or rent scooters to minors face a €1,000 fine. Riders must carry personal identification and proof of insurance while operating the vehicles, and owners are required to hold third‑party civil liability insurance.
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis outlined the initiative as part of a broader road‑safety plan, while Deputy Transport Minister Giorgos Kotsiras said, “Our goal is clear: to enhance safety on the roads, reduce accidents and protect human life, especially children.”
