Greece battles 60 forest fires as fire services deploy nationwide response

Greece recorded 60 agricultural‑forest fires over the past 24 hours, with 15 occurring in the Central Macedonia region. Ongoing high‑risk fires were reported in Leipsydrio (Kilkis) and Kouflia (Chalkidona), both classified as category 4 danger zones.

In Leipsydrio, around 55 firefighters, two infantry teams, 15 ground vehicles, five aircraft and two helicopters were dispatched. In Kouflia, 35 firefighters, one infantry team, nine vehicles and a helicopter worked the blaze, and public alerts were sent via the 112 emergency system.

Other notable incidents included fires in Attica (as‑pros Pyrgos, Spata, and the hill of Saranta Martires), Grevena, Thessaloniki’s New Passengers area, Rhodes (Emponas), and the municipality of Proponitis in the regional unit of Chalkidiki, where 45 firefighters, volunteer units, 12 vehicles and multiple aircraft were engaged. Authorities issued evacuation notices for residents in the affected zones and deployed a fire‑fighting vessel along the coast as a precautionary measure.
