Greek wildfires kill three firefighters, force evacuations on Crete
In late July 2024 a series of wildfires swept across Greece, with 37 separate forest and field fires recorded. The most severe blaze erupted in the Rethymno area of Crete, spreading over more than 15 km and hampered by winds reaching 9 Beaufort, which prevented aerial water drops. Two firefighters died while battling the fire in Rethymno and a third lost his life in the Peloponnese region.
Approximately 1,000 residents were evacuated from villages on Crete, including the seaside community of Agia Galini. Around 224 firefighters, supported by 11 special forest‑fire units and 53 fire‑trucks, fought the flames that also destroyed houses, plantations and livestock farms. Additional fires ignited on the islands of Paros and Lesbos and on the mainland in Thessaly.
The strong winds continued to challenge ground crews, leaving aerial assets grounded and forcing emergency services to rely on ground operations alone.
