43-year-old arrested for causing Greece's largest summer forest fire in Phthiotis

A massive agro‑forest fire erupted on 1 July 2026 in the Kalabódi area of the Lokroi municipality, Phthiotis, becoming the largest blaze recorded in Greece during the current fire‑season. Investigators determined that the fire started while a thresher‑mower was operating for agricultural work, producing sparks that ignited the dry vegetation.

Authorities apprehended a 43‑year‑old local under the auto‑process for negligent arson. The response involved 155 firefighters, 41 fire‑engine vehicles, seven foot‑patrol groups, 22 aircraft and nine helicopters, as well as aerial monitoring by drones. Three nearby villages—Sphaka, Zeli and Katálima—were evacuated and residents were moved to the town of Elatia.

From 1 January to 2 July 2026, the Greek Fire Service issued 508 administrative fines totaling about €605 000 and recorded 149 arrests for fire‑related offences, 91 % of which were for negligence. Officials emphasized the need for strict fire‑safety measures during the anti‑fire period and pledged continued inspections.
