Greece bolsters Aegean maritime presence amid sovereignty disputes

Tensions in the Aegean Sea are rising due to disputes over maritime sovereignty and fishing rights. Reports indicate that Turkish fishermen are operating within Greek territorial waters, a situation critics claim undermines Greek national sovereignty and impacts the livelihoods of local Greek fishing communities.

In response to regional challenges, Greece is significantly bolstering its maritime presence through the ‘Aegis 2’ program. This major equipment upgrade for the Hellenic Coast Guard includes the acquisition of new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), high-speed interceptors, drones, and unmanned surface vehicles. The modernization effort aims to expand surveillance capabilities from the Aegean to Crete and the Ionian Sea, enhancing the Coast Guard's ability to monitor maritime zones and protect national interests.
