Greece: Calls for healthcare inspections and insurance reform

The Patients' Association of Greece is calling for the reinstatement of the Health and Welfare Services Inspectorate (SEYYP) to strengthen oversight of healthcare providers. The association is advocating for both regular and unannounced inspections of private medical facilities to ensure that services, equipment, and staffing comply with safety standards, rather than merely verifying licenses.

Separately, PASOK MP Milena Apostolaki has formally requested the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) to review the long-term sustainability of lifelong private health insurance in Greece. Apostolaki notes that these policies were marketed for decades without the capital reserves necessary to manage risks associated with an aging population. This lack of preparation has led to significant premium increases, resulting in the cancellation of coverage for approximately 300,000 policyholders, while 250,000 others remain at risk.
