Greek healthcare oversight and insurance stability debate

Political parties and advocacy groups in Greece are intensifying calls for the reorganization of healthcare oversight following the 2019 abolition of the Health Services and Welfare Inspectors Body (SEYYP). Critics argue that transferring inspection duties to the National Transparency Authority has created a regulatory gap lacking specialized medical expertise.

Following a prosecutor’s investigation into the death of Giorgos Mazonakis at a private medical facility, PASOK-Kίνημα Αλλαγής has demanded urgent reforms. MP Ioannis Tsimaris submitted a parliamentary question regarding the legality of private healthcare operations and the adequacy of preventive inspections. Party spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas emphasized that public health requires a “proactive and systematic supervision system” with sufficient staffing, rather than reactive investigations triggered only by serious incidents.

The Patients' Association of Greece has also joined the call, advocating for the reinstatement of the SETYP to facilitate regular and unannounced inspections of private facilities to ensure compliance with safety standards, equipment requirements, and staffing levels.

In a related development concerning healthcare stability, PASOK MP Milena Apostolaki has requested that the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) review the sustainability of lifelong private health insurance in Greece. Apostolaki noted that these policies were marketed without adequate capital reserves for an aging population, leading to massive premium increases and the cancellation of coverage for approximately 300,000 policyholders, with another 250,000 remaining at risk.

More recently, PASOK has criticized Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis regarding the implementation of the MedWatch system. The opposition party argued that the Minister’s admissions of a “porous regime of controls, supervision, and misleading advertisements” in private healthcare facilities are evidence of institutional failures rather than government success. PASOK further questioned the Minister’s suitability for the role, criticizing his suggestion that it is “reasonable” to promote private medical centers in his official capacity.
