Greece clarifies mass reservist notifications amid mobilization rumors

The Hellenic General Staff has addressed public concerns regarding the mass distribution of ‘Special Deployment Documents’ to reservists via mobile phones and email. While the simultaneous notifications sparked rumors of imminent military mobilization, military authorities clarified that the messages are part of a data update process.

The notifications aim to update essential information, including addresses, ages, and areas of expertise, for reservists. This initiative is a component of the ‘Agenda 2030’ reform program, which seeks to establish a more organized and responsive reserve force of approximately 150,000 active reservists by 2030.

Under the new reform, the Greek Ministry of Defense is working on a mechanism to pre-assign reservists to specific units and update their training to ensure rapid deployment if necessary. The reform also includes the creation of three new special operations units in Attica, Central Macedonia, and Northern Evros, two of which will consist entirely of reservists. Additionally, the age limit for maintaining reservist status has been increased to 60.
