Greece military reservist digital reform
Overview
The Hellenic Army General Staff initiated a digital reform to update reservist records by sending approximately 100,000 SMS and email notifications via the gov.gr platform. The mass distribution of these notifications, which included military ID numbers and Special Marching Orders (EFPs), triggered widespread public concern and social media speculation regarding potential military mobilization.
In response, Ministry of National Defence authorities clarified that the messages do not constitute a call for immediate deployment. Instead, the notifications are part of the ‘Agenda 2030’ initiative, a modernization program designed to transition from paper-based systems to digital communication to update age, health status, and residential data.
The reform aims to establish a responsive reserve force of roughly 150,000 active reservists by 2030. Key components of the program include increasing the reservist age limit to 60 and creating three new special operations units in Attica, Central Macedonia, and Northern Evros. Under this system, color-coded Special Marching Orders indicate whether a reservist is assigned to a specific unit for training (green) or is on standby for future placement (white).
