Greece condemns Russian attacks on Ukrainian diplomatic sites at UN Security Council
At a United Nations Security Council meeting, Greece voiced deep concern over recent Russian strikes that damaged diplomatic facilities in Kyiv and harmed civilians. Greek permanent representative Ag. Balta denounced attacks on non‑military infrastructure, cultural institutions and humanitarian personnel, urging respect for the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.
Greece called on Russia to refrain from threats or warnings against diplomatic missions and to accept an immediate, unconditional cease‑fire. The statement was supported by Latvia, France, Denmark and the United Kingdom. The appeal echoed UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres, who warned that large‑scale attacks on May 23‑24 underscored the seriousness of the situation, noting more than 15,000 civilian deaths since February 2022, including nearly 800 children. Guterres stressed the risk of uncontrolled escalation and urged greater diplomacy and a lasting, fair peace.
Greece also highlighted the damage to over ten cultural institutions in Kyiv and coordinated with UNESCO to condemn any assault on cultural heritage.
