Greece construction activity surges as government plans fuel subsidies

Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) indicates a significant surge in Greek construction activity. In June 2026, building permits rose by 21.5% compared to the previous year, with total surface area increasing by 22.5% and volume by 20.5%. While most regions saw growth—notably Western Macedonia with an 80% surge in area—Thessaly experienced a decline in the number of permits, though the volume of construction there increased due to larger project sizes.

Simultaneously, Greek households are facing economic pressures from rising energy costs. Fuel prices for diesel and unleaded gasoline have seen substantial increases, prompting the government to consider new subsidy packages. The administration is working with refineries to lower diesel prices below 2 euros per liter and is exploring measures to reduce heating oil costs for the upcoming winter season.

Regarding consumer spending, ELSTAT reports that annual expenditure on clothing and footwear rose by 2.5% in 2025, reaching 4.6 billion euros. While overall household spending increased by 5.5%, the real increase, adjusted for inflation, was approximately 2.9%. Clothing and footwear now represent 4.9% of the total consumer basket, following food, housing, and transportation as major expenditure categories.
