Greece, Cyprus vow stronger defence and energy partnership

Cyprus House President Annita Demetriou urged deeper cooperation with Greece on defence, security and energy, citing shared challenges such as migration pressures, hybrid threats and regional instability. She highlighted projects like the Great Sea Interconnector as vital for Cyprus’ energy security and called for a stronger European approach to deterrence and stability.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met Demetriou in Athens and pledged tighter coordination between Athens and Nicosia on the Cyprus issue. He praised Demetriou’s parliamentary diplomacy and reaffirmed Greece’s role as Cyprus’ “strongest brotherly ally”. Both leaders stressed the need for continued diplomatic momentum, joint committee work and closer collaboration on defence, security and European affairs.
