Greece: Debates over Ancient Greek education and the role of modern schools

Discussions regarding the teaching of Ancient Greek in the Greek education system have been a persistent issue for decades. Historical records show that as early as 1975 and 1976, institutional figures and scholars like Dimitris Maronitis addressed the complexities of how the ancient language should be integrated into modern schooling. Maronitis proposed a non-conventional logic, questioning whether the ancient language should be treated as a native component of the Greek identity or as a foreign language to be studied.

Beyond linguistic debates, the broader role of the modern school is under scrutiny. As traditional sources of education—such as the arts, extracurricular reading, and family structures—face decline due to modern social pressures and working hours, the responsibility for shaping youth ethics and social behavior has increasingly fallen upon the school system. Experts emphasize that while improving physical infrastructure and digital tools is necessary, the core of educational success relies on the human element: the teachers who serve as role models for integrity and consistency.
