Greece declares water emergency on Tinos and Alonissos islands

The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has declared a water emergency on the Aegean islands of Tinos and Alonissos, activating a three‑month special status starting 17 June 2026. The measure allows authorities to bypass normal bureaucracy and fast‑track projects such as the rental of mobile desalination units and other rapid water‑supply solutions.

The emergency follows severe water shortages caused by high temperatures and a surge in tourists that far outnumbers the local population. Similar pressures have been reported on other islands including Karpathos, Leros, Patmos, Astypalea, Symi, Aegina and Corfu. Officials stress that no travel restrictions are imposed; the emergency aims solely to secure drinking water for residents and visitors throughout the peak summer season.
