The crisis is driven by rising temperatures, declining rainfall, and a surge in visitors; for instance, Mykonos reported a nine-fold increase in consumption. Experts warn that the situation is structural, noting that up to 60% of water is lost to leaks in aging networks.

In response, the Greek government has allocated over €15 million for desalination, reservoirs, and grid upgrades across nine islands. Significant projects include a 1,050 m³ per day desalination plant in Katapola, Amorgos, and a 600 m³ per day unit in Meganisi. On Astypalaia, the Frágma reservoir has dropped to one-sixth capacity, prompting the use of a provisional desalination plant and causing residents to rely on bottled water due to quality concerns.

Beyond the islands, broader water security issues have emerged. A study found snow cover on ten Greek mountains has halved since the mid-1980s, threatening mountain reservoirs and winter tourism. Meanwhile, MEP Dimitris Tsiodras has urged the European Commission to address the €23 billion annual investment gap for water management in island regions. While desalination provides relief, officials emphasize it is an energy-intensive emergency measure rather than a permanent solution.
