Greece deploys Copernicus satellite mapping for Achaia wildfire

On 31 July 2026 a large wildfire swept the Regional Unit of Achaia in western Greece. The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection requested activation of the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) for mapping the affected area (activation code EMSR 910). The request was approved by the EU, and the Directorate for Emergency Management Planning of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, acting as the national contact point, initiated the service.

Copernicus will generate satellite‑derived maps and data products for the fire‑damaged zones and make them available free of charge to all relevant Greek authorities. The mapping aims to support emergency response, assess the fire’s impact, and aid in managing the consequences of the disaster.
