Greece wildfire response and mitigation

Overview

In early July 2026 the Greek government ordered the cleanup of vacant land to lower the risk of wildfires. A month later, a large fire broke out in the Achaia region on 31 July. The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection activated the EU Copernicus Emergency Management Service to produce satellite‑derived maps of the burned area. The mapping products were provided free of charge to Greek authorities to aid emergency response, impact assessment, and post‑fire management.
