Greece emerges as Southeast Europe energy hub amid US strategic partnership
At the 10th Southeast Europe Energy Forum in Thessaloniki, US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle highlighted Greece’s evolving role as a central energy hub for Southeast Europe. She emphasized that Greece is transitioning from an energy consumer to a regional supplier, a shift critical to the US strategy of enhancing energy independence for its allies.
A key component of this regional architecture is the expansion of the Vertical Corridor toward Serbia and North Macedonia. This project aims to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on Russian energy by facilitating the flow of natural gas through the Balkans toward Central Europe.
Ambassador Guilfoyle also announced that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to visit Athens in the coming weeks, underscoring the strategic importance of the US-Greece partnership. The cooperation extends beyond natural gas to include broader energy investments, such as agreements with ExxonMobil and Chevron, and the potential for Greece’s first offshore drilling activities in four decades.
Following the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation for the Vertical Corridor, DESFA and regional operators have entered a 90-day period to assess capacity needs and plan for necessary infrastructure investments to ensure a competitive and integrated gas transport route.
