Greece ends supermarket margin price‑cap, keeps 5.9% cuts on 2,000 items

The Greek government concluded a meeting at the Maximos conference centre with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Chatzidakis, Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos and representatives of major retailers and food‑industry groups. The emergency price‑cap on profit margins for food, supermarket goods and fuel, which had applied to about 60 product categories, expires on 30 June.

To prevent a surge in prices over the summer, the Ministry of Development secured a commitment from businesses to maintain the existing 5.9 % discount on roughly 2,000 product codes throughout July and August. The government plans to launch a "National Social Agreement" with the market in September for broader price reductions on essential household items.

The meeting also involved the head of the Independent Authority for Consumer Protection, Despina Tsaggaris, and leaders of the Hellenic Food Industry Federation, the Greek Trade Association and the Union of Supermarkets, underscoring a coordinated effort between the state and the retail sector to curb inflation.
