Greece establishes Central Blood Information System
The Greek Ministry of Health has established the Central Blood Information System and the National Register of Voluntary Donors. This initiative aims to coordinate various services to ensure the safe, efficient, and progressive operation of the National Blood System.
The new system will support blood collection from large population groups, monitor stockpiles, and oversee the processing of plasma derivatives and transfusion materials. It will also manage the movement of blood and its derivatives throughout the country.
Key functions include a blood vigilance system to record serious or adverse events related to collection, testing, processing, storage, and distribution. Additionally, the system will monitor adverse reactions occurring during or after transfusions to ensure quality and safety. All operations will comply with international principles and relevant European and national legislation to optimize healthcare services for transfusion-dependent patients.
