Greece expands Public Onasis Schools network to 20 campuses by September

The Public Onasis Schools (ΔΗΜΩΣ) network began operation in the 2025‑26 school year with 12 campuses located in Kolono, Acharnae, Peristeri, Kozani, Xanthi and Thessaloniki. The programme, overseen by the Ministry of Education and supported by the Onasis Foundation, aims to provide modern public schools that serve socially and economically challenged areas.

From September, the network will grow to 20 schools with new sites in Aigaleo, Rhodes, Heraklion and Pyrgos. When fully developed, the system is projected to accommodate about 6,000 students each year and more than 22,000 pupils by 2037. Schools feature renovated facilities, equipment, AI‑driven learning tools, and partnerships with universities and local authorities. Admission exams attracted 3,276 applicants in the first year (1,166 admitted) and 3,946 in the second (1,786 admitted).

Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki described the schools as a “modern public school that serves as a model for the entire education system,” emphasizing innovation, community engagement and measurable outcomes.
