Greece extends adult obesity treatment program under health ministry

Deputy Health Minister Irini Agapidaki announced that Greece's adult obesity program will continue. She told the TV channel ACTION 24 that the initiative has been “very successful” and is a therapeutic approach involving medication, medical supervision and nutritional monitoring for people with very high body‑mass index and elevated cardiovascular risk.

The programme, which currently serves about 43,500 participants, is linked to the national preventive screening that identified 6.5 million citizens; roughly 300 000 were flagged early for serious conditions, including early‑stage breast cancer and cardiovascular problems that required immediate intervention. The ministry is working with Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis to resolve a technical issue raised by the European Commission, assuring beneficiaries that treatment will not be interrupted.
