Greece preventive health program funding

In late July 2026 Greek health authorities confirmed the continuation and funding reform of the nationwide preventive health initiative “Προλαμβάνω”, which includes an adult obesity treatment component. Deputy Health Minister Irini Agapidaki announced that the obesity program, serving about 43,500 participants, will remain in place while the broader preventive scheme—screening 6.5 million citizens and identifying early‑stage disease in more than 300 000 cases—continues unchanged.

From 1 September 2026 the programme’s financing will move from the national Recovery Fund to the budget of the National Organization for Healthcare Services Provision (EOPYY), with additional resources transferred from the National Central Supply Authority for Health (EKAPY). The shift is not expected to affect free preventive examinations for breast, cervical, colorectal cancers and cardiovascular disease, nor coverage of anti‑obesity medication. The ministry is also addressing a technical issue raised by the European Commission to ensure treatment is not interrupted.
