Greece mandates new EU plastic driver’s licences by Jan 2033

Greece will replace all paper‑based driver’s licences with the new EU‑type plastic card. Under European regulations, the deadline for complete replacement is 19 January 2033; after that date the old three‑fold licences will no longer be valid.

Replacement is compulsory for drivers who reach the age of 65, for licences that are severely damaged, lost or stolen, and when a holder wishes to add a new vehicle category or amend personal details. Once a driver is 65, the licence must be renewed every three years; after age 80 the renewal interval shortens and additional medical examinations are required.

The change can be carried out online through the gov.gr portal. Applicants need Taxisnet credentials, a photo and signature uploaded to the myPhoto service, and must pay the electronic fee. While the new plastic licence is optional for those who do not fall into the mandatory categories, many drivers choose to switch earlier. The new card is more durable, includes enhanced anti‑forgery features, and is recognised across the European Union, simplifying international travel.
