Greece drowning statistics highlight elderly vulnerability
Greece faces a significant challenge regarding drowning incidents, with data showing a high frequency of water-related fatalities. According to Safe Water Sports and the National Public Health Organization, the country records an annual average of approximately 357 drowning deaths. In 2025, 357 people lost their lives in recreational water activities, with Greek nationals accounting for 61% of these fatalities, despite the country hosting over 34 million foreign tourists annually.
Demographic data highlights a specific vulnerability among the elderly. In 2025, approximately 80% of drowning victims were over the age of 60, with 237 victims aged 70 or older. Men also represent a higher proportion of fatalities, accounting for 67% of deaths compared to 33% for women.
To combat these trends, authorities and organizations like the Hellenic Red Cross are emphasizing prevention through public awareness campaigns, the distribution of informative materials on beaches, and the importance of using organized beaches with lifeguard supervision. Experts note that many elderly individuals swim early in the morning before lifeguard coverage begins, prompting some municipalities to adjust supervision schedules.
