Greece faces tourist safety concerns and West Nile virus surge

Greece is currently managing two distinct public health and safety crises during the peak summer tourist season.

On the island of Zakynthos, medical officials reported that eight foreign tourists sought hospital treatment for sexual assault within a 20-day period. Michalis Giannakos, president of the Greek healthcare union POEDIN, noted that the incidents often involve individuals taking advantage of intoxicated victims. Most cases are linked to the Laganas area, a popular nightlife destination. While the union reports eight cases, Greek police stated they have officially recorded three incidents between May and early August.

Simultaneously, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) has reported a significant surge in West Nile virus infections. Since the start of the season, Greece has recorded 157 locally acquired cases, with 47 new infections reported in a single week. The virus has resulted in 13 deaths, primarily affecting individuals over the age of 65. The outbreak is most concentrated in the Attica region, including Athens, though cases have also been identified in areas such as Imathia.
