Public health and safety incidents in Greece

Overview

Greece has faced several public health and safety challenges during the summer season. In August, the country dealt with a surge in West Nile virus infections, with the National Public Health Organization (EODY) reporting 157 locally acquired cases and 13 deaths, primarily affecting those over 65. Concurrently, reports emerged from Zakynthos regarding sexual assaults involving tourists, particularly in the Laganas nightlife area.

By early September, reports shifted toward road safety incidents. In Ierapetra, a vehicle collision resulted in minor injuries to a child, while a severe accident in the Ampelokipos area of Zakynthos left two Romanian nationals in critical condition following a collision between a motorcycle and a car.
