Greece faces vehicle registration crisis due to license plate shortage
Greece faces a potential crisis in the automotive market due to a shortage of metal blanks required to manufacture vehicle license plates. This shortage threatens to block the registration of new cars and motorcycles, even for vehicles that have already been manufactured, imported, and sold to customers.
The issue has been developing since early 2026, initially impacting the motorcycle sector. Despite official warnings and interventions from regional authorities to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as early as February, the supply shortage persists. This administrative failure risks leaving consumers unable to take delivery of vehicles they have already paid for or are currently financing.
