West Nile virus surge in Greece leads to 6 deaths
Greece is experiencing a significant surge in West Nile virus cases, ranking second in Europe for detected infections behind Italy. According to data from the National Public Health Organization (EODY) through August 5, 65 domestic cases have been recorded, resulting in 6 deaths, all of whom were over the age of 65.
The outbreak is heavily concentrated in the Attica region, which accounts for 48 of the total cases. Specific areas such as East Attica, particularly around Markopoulo and Spata, have seen high concentrations of infection. Many patients, particularly the elderly, have developed severe central nervous system complications, including encephalitis and meningitis.
Currently, 20 patients are hospitalized, with 8 in intensive care units and 4 in high-dependency units. The Athens Chamber of Commerce and the Athens Medical Association have raised concerns regarding the timeliness and effectiveness of mosquito control measures in the affected regions. Health officials note that favorable weather conditions, including humidity and standing water, have facilitated mosquito breeding, contributing to the spread of the virus.
