A 27-year-old man has confessed to the murder of his 25-year-old former partner, a biology graduate working in aquaculture, in Igoumenitsa, Greece. The victim, identified as Penelope, was found dead in a kiosk along a local bicycle path on the night of Sunday, September 20, 2026.

Forensic examinations conducted by the Ioannina Forensic Service revealed that the victim sustained approximately 15 knife wounds, including deep fatal injuries to her neck and several wounds to her back, chest, and leg. Evidence of defensive wounds on her hands and knee suggests she attempted to resist the attack, which was carried out with a 7.5 cm paring knife.

The suspect initially attempted to mislead authorities by claiming that both he and the victim had been attacked by four masked individuals. However, after being confronted with inconsistencies by investigators, he retracted his statement and confessed, stating, “We argued and I lost my temper.” He also reportedly inflicted self-inflicted wounds to his chest in an apparent attempt to appear as a victim.

The suspect is currently being held under guard at Filiaoti Hospital and faces charges of premeditated murder, domestic violence, and violations of laws regarding weapons and narcotics. The local community and the Women's Initiative of Igoumenitsa have reacted with outrage, with some calling for the legal recognition of the term “femicide.”
