Defensive wounds on her hands and knee suggest she attempted to resist the attack. Social media posts from the victim in the days preceding the attack revealed deep distress and warnings regarding her situation.

Following the incident, the Women's Initiative of Igoumenitsa organized a large-scale protest and march. Citizens gathered at the City Hall square to demand justice and the legal recognition of the term ‘femicide,’ criticizing the use of euphemisms like ‘crimes of passion.’ Protesters marched to the bicycle path where the victim was killed. The victim's family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Diotima Center, which supports victims of domestic violence. A funeral service for Penelope was held in Metamorfosi, Attica.
