Greek Civil Protection declares Red Code fire risk for seven regions

On Thursday 30 July 2026 the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection placed the national civil‑protection mechanism in Red Code (full mobilisation) for seven regions, citing a very high fire‑risk (Category 4) forecast. The alert covers Attica (including Kythera), Crete, the Peloponnese, Central Greece, the North and South Aegean, Western Greece and Eastern Macedonia‑Thrace. All relevant agencies – the Fire Service, regional administrations, municipalities, the Armed Forces, Police and Coast Guard – were ordered to operate at maximum readiness.

The daily fire‑risk map also predicts an extreme fire‑risk (Category 5) for Attica and Evia on 1 August 2026. Strong northerly winds are expected to hinder aerial firefighting, preventing water drops. Three firefighters have already been killed in recent operations. Vehicle access restrictions have been imposed in municipalities such as Patras, Rafina and others, and the municipal swimming pool in Rafina has been closed. Citizens are urged to avoid any activity that could start a fire and to report any blaze immediately to 199 or the EU emergency number 112. Minister Evaggelos Tourna announced the heightened state of alert and called for public responsibility.
