Greece firefighting operations respond to fires in Thesprotia and Rethymno
Multiple fires have broken out in different regions of Greece, prompting significant emergency responses.
In Sagiada, Thesprotia, a fire involving low vegetation began around 13:15 on Wednesday. Firefighting efforts include 12 firefighters, a specialized foot patrol from the 5th EMODE, five vehicles, two aircraft, and one helicopter. The Municipality of Filiates is also providing water tankers to assist. Authorities have placed the area under high fire risk (Category 3) and have mobilized an arson investigation unit to determine the cause.
In the Rethymno region, a fire erupted near Axos in the Mylopotamos Municipality. This incident is particularly challenging as the flames initially spread through tires, creating dense smoke and extremely high temperatures before reaching nearby grasslands. Six fire engines and an EMODE team are currently working to contain the blaze and prevent further spread.
