Greece authorities arrest multiple individuals for arson and fire safety violations

Authorities in Greece have conducted several arrests related to fire incidents in Chania and Messinia.

In Messinia, a 60-year-old man was re-arrested after allegedly causing two new fires on August 30, 2026, using an open flame. This follows his previous arrest on August 27 for two other intentional arsons. Despite being released with restrictions after his initial appearance before the Prosecutor's Office of Kalamata, he is now accused of causing a total of four fires within a five-day period. He faces charges of intentional arson, consecutive, and continuous offenses.

In Chania, three individuals were arrested over the weekend for various fire-related incidents. One man was detained for causing a fire through negligence while operating a crane in Plekatina, which ignited dry grass. Another was arrested in Galata for using a grill in violation of fire protection laws during an extreme risk period. A third individual was detained in Vambakopoulos for lighting a fire during a cultural event in violation of safety regulations.

The Greek Fire Service reported that between January 1 and August 30, 2026, 755 administrative fines have been issued, totaling over 1.25 million euros, and 324 arrests have been made for causing fires.
