Greece freezes summer food prices as Macedonia weighs similar steps

The Greek government, through the Minister of Development, announced a public commitment to keep the prices of roughly 2,000 food and consumer products stable throughout July and August, with no new price increases. A further agreement for additional cuts is being prepared for September.

In neighboring North Macedonia, officials held meetings to discuss possible measures. While no formal price‑freeze has been introduced, the government aims to keep the annual change in basic food prices for July below three percent and warned it could intervene if prices rise faster. Macedonia’s inflation was 4.8% in May, with food and non‑alcoholic beverages up 4.7% year‑on‑year.

A Bulgarian consumer shared a receipt from a seaside restaurant, showing a total bill of €67.94 for a meal, and argued that prices in Greece are not cheaper than in Bulgaria, highlighting regional price comparisons among consumers.
