Greece faces rising fuel and energy costs amid global oil price surge
Greek consumers and businesses are facing significant economic pressure as fuel and energy prices surge. Driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East and rising Brent crude prices, which have surpassed $108 per barrel, the cost of petrol and diesel in Greece has climbed sharply. Average unleaded petrol prices have exceeded €2.11 per litre, while diesel sits around €2.07 per litre.
Industry experts warn that heating oil prices could rise by as much as 70% for the upcoming winter season, potentially reaching €1.90 per litre. In response, the Greek Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, stated that the government is monitoring developments closely and is prepared to intervene with support measures, such as extending diesel subsidies or providing incentives for electric heating, to protect households.
Beyond immediate fuel costs, the energy crisis is impacting broader economic indicators. Deutsche Bank's Joachim Nagel noted that energy price volatility will likely dictate the European Central Bank's future interest rate decisions. Additionally, the Greek industrial sector is calling for the resolution of pending energy tax settlements to alleviate liquidity constraints caused by high operational costs.
