Greece Implements AI‑Powered Traffic Cameras for Automated Violation Notices

The Greek government has expanded the use of artificial‑intelligence‑enabled traffic cameras to automatically record violations such as red‑light runs, mobile‑phone use and failure to wear seat belts. When a breach is captured, the infraction is sent digitally to the driver’s MyGov portal and, where available, to a mobile wallet; in some cases a paper notice is mailed, though the share of printed mail has fallen below 30 %. The General Secretary of the Information Systems Directorate, Demosthenes Anagnostopoulos, stressed that the public never sends messages requesting clicks on links, aiming to prevent fraud.

Drivers can contest a fine through the police, and the system allows for a second review of the camera image before a violation is finalized. Anagnostopoulos noted that roughly 30 % of recorded offences involve red‑signal breaches, another 20 % involve phone use, and a further 20 % involve seat‑belt non‑use. The move is presented as a step toward fully digital communication between the state and citizens.
