Greece implements digital license plates amid shifting auto market

Greece is implementing a digital transformation for vehicle license plates. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has introduced a new automated system to replace bureaucratic processes. This digital platform will manage the entire lifecycle of license plates, including applications, manufacturing, delivery, and payments for private cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles. To prevent monopolies, an open registry of manufacturers will be established, allowing any qualified legal entity to participate.

Separately, the Greek automotive market saw a significant 37% decline in new passenger vehicle registrations in August 2026, with only 5,159 units sold compared to 8,191 in August 2025. Despite this monthly drop, year-to-date registrations remain up by 2.5%. Market trends show a strong shift toward electrification: hybrid vehicles (HEV) captured 59.8% of the market in August, while fully electric vehicles (BEV) saw their market share double to 10.6%, up from 5.2% the previous year. Conversely, gasoline vehicle market share continued to decline.
