Greece implements environmental protection and climate resilience initiatives

In Patras, the Eco Forum 2026 addressed the urgent need for integrated planning to combat the climate crisis. The forum focused on two primary challenges: ensuring water resource security and adapting coastal cities to changing environmental conditions. Discussions emphasized the necessity of basing public policy on scientific data, including the development of a unified digital geological map to manage water resources effectively.

In Crete, a new program titled ‘Emergency management measures for the preservation of the endangered ecosystem of Chrysi Island Ierapetra 2026-2028’ has been approved. With a budget of 169,300 euros, the initiative is a collaboration between the Organization for Natural Environment and Climate Change, the Region of Crete, and the Decentralized Administration of Crete. The project aims to protect the island's fragile ecosystem, specifically its cedar forests and sand dunes, which are threatened by human activity and climate change. Planned interventions include installing a meteorological station and monitoring vegetation desiccation to better inform conservation efforts.
