Greece environmental and climate resilience initiatives

Overview

In late October and early November 2026, Greece focused on various initiatives to address climate change, digital transformation, and environmental protection. In Patras, the Eco Forum 2026 highlighted the need for integrated planning to secure water resources and adapt coastal cities through scientific data and digital mapping.

Simultaneously, a 169,300 euro conservation program was approved for Chrysi Island in Crete to protect its endangered ecosystem, including cedar forests and sand dunes. This was complemented by the sixth annual Green Deal Greece 2026 conference, hosted by the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), which shifted focus from green transition theory toward practical resilience.

During the conference, regional governor Nikos Hardalias called for a centralized coordinating mechanism to address traffic congestion through unified metropolitan planning in Attica. In the energy sector, officials emphasized transitioning to renewable sources using storage technologies like batteries and hydrogen to reduce natural gas reliance. Greece has also secured 1.46 billion euros from the Social Climate Fund to modernize transport fleets and support electric mobility through 2032.

Digital governance remained a priority. Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou announced projects including a new secure communication system for security forces using 5G, 6G, and satellite networks, alongside the use of the Daidalos supercomputer. Reports indicated the gov.gr platform saved citizens and businesses 6 billion euros in 2025. Regarding economic investment, Deputy Minister Nikos Papathanasis stated that national investment resources are set to increase to 23 billion euros for the 2026–2030 period.
