Greece implements new traffic surveillance and electric vehicle leasing
Greece is implementing new measures regarding road safety and vehicle accessibility. In Athens, authorities are increasing the presence of surveillance systems to enhance road safety and reduce accidents. This includes 388 cameras managed by the Attica Region for red-light violations, as well as new AI-powered cameras capable of detecting mobile phone use and seatbelt non-compliance.
Additionally, small black cameras have appeared near traffic lights in areas like Nea Filadelfia and Perama. According to the navigation app Waze, these specific devices are used for traffic flow control rather than issuing fines.
On the economic front, a new social leasing program for electric vehicles is being developed under the Greek Climate Social Fund. The program aims to provide electric cars to approximately 15,000 vulnerable households through a four-year lease with monthly payments expected to be under 150 euros. Total subsidies may reach 12,500 euros for standard beneficiaries and 14,000 euros for families with members with disabilities. This initiative aligns with broader European policies aimed at transitioning away from older, more polluting vehicles.
