Greece implements smart traffic cameras and digital vehicle notifications

Dimosthenis Anagnostopoulos, General Secretary of Information Systems and Digital Governance, has provided details regarding the implementation of smart traffic cameras and digital notifications in Greece. He emphasized that the new camera systems are designed to enhance road safety rather than increase revenue, specifically targeting violations such as running red lights, failing to use seatbelts, and mobile phone usage while driving.

Official traffic violation notices will be delivered digitally via the citizen's mailbox on gov.gr and through the digital Wallet app. Anagnostopoulos issued a warning against fraudulent SMS messages containing links for fine payments, stating that the state does not use such methods and will never request Taxisnet or banking credentials via links.

Additionally, the government plans to issue digital notifications to over two million vehicle owners regarding uninsured vehicles, unpaid circulation fees, and overdue mandatory technical inspections (KTEO). This process will be facilitated through automated inter-ministerial data integration. Artificial intelligence will be used to support the processing of objections, though final decisions remain with public officials.
