Greece imposes stricter electric scooter rules to protect minors

The Greek government has approved a legislative package tightening the use of electric scooters. The measures ban riding scooters on public roads for anyone under 17, except disability‑adapted models, and prohibit the sale, lease or rental of scooters to minors. Riders must carry an official ID and proof of insurance, and owners are required to hold third‑party civil liability coverage. Penalties have been increased: fines for riding on roads with speed limits over 50 km/h rise from €30 to €350, a €150 fine applies to under‑17 riders, and a €250 fine can be imposed for other violations. Companies that sell or lease scooters to under‑age users face fines of €1,000. Deputy Transport Minister Giorgos Kotziras said, “Our goal is clear: to enhance road safety, reduce accidents and protect human life, especially children.”
