Greece inflation rises to 3.8% in August

Greece's inflation rate rose to 3.8% in August, up from 3.4% in July, according to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). This upward trend is primarily driven by significant price increases in energy, housing, and transportation.

Key drivers of the inflation spike include dramatic rises in heating oil (53.2%), natural gas (40.2%), diesel (30.6%), and gasoline (15.3%). The housing sector saw a 9.7% annual increase, fueled by rising rents (6.2%) and home maintenance costs. Additionally, transportation costs rose by 7.7%, impacted by higher air travel prices.

In the food and non-alcoholic beverages category, prices increased by 0.9% annually. Notable increases were seen in beef (13.5%), fish (11.5%), lamb and goat (11.3%), and eggs (4.3%). Conversely, some sectors provided relief to consumers, with olive oil prices dropping by 15% and fruit prices decreasing by 7.1%.
