Greece initiates olive fruit fly control spraying in Aitoloakarnania and Messinia

Agricultural authorities in Greece have announced schedules for bait spraying programs to combat the olive fruit fly in the regions of Aitoloakarnania and Messinia.

In Aitoloakarnania, spraying is scheduled to begin on September 14, 2026, across various municipal and local communities. However, Sector 4, which includes areas such as Agrinio, Agia Varvara, and Agios Nikolaos, will not be included at this time due to an incomplete tender process. The program utilizes active substances including Deltamethrin, Lambda-cyhalothrin, and Acetamiprid. Authorities advise olive growers to ensure access to their groves, while beekeepers and livestock owners are urged to move animals and hives away from treated areas to prevent poisoning. Organic farmers must clearly mark their plots to avoid accidental spraying.

In Messinia, the Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine has scheduled spraying for September 10, 2026. The program includes new spraying in communities such as Alonia, Arfaron, and Skala, as well as continued spraying in Iklinea and Arsinis. Farmers are requested to clear groves of obstacles and weeds to ensure the safety and efficiency of the spraying crews. Similar precautions regarding livestock and beehives apply in this region.
