Greece police intensify road safety inspections and helmet enforcement

The Hellenic Police have intensified road safety enforcement across Greece through several major campaigns. Under the “Zero Tolerance for Non-Use of Helmets” initiative, authorities conducted 21,481 inspections between September 7 and September 13, 2026. These checks resulted in 2,393 violations, including 2,193 against drivers and 200 against passengers. The campaign specifically targets motorcyclists, delivery professionals, and users of light electric vehicles (EPΗΟ). Under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), violators face strict penalties, including 350 euro fines and 30-day license suspensions.

In a separate effort to ensure student safety at the start of the school year, police conducted inspections of 2,263 school buses nationwide. These checks identified 457 violations, primarily concerning tachograph usage, as well as issues with working hours, speed limits, and missing safety equipment like fire extinguishers or first aid kits.

Broader traffic enforcement has also utilized modern surveillance, including AI and cameras, to monitor red-light violations and speeding. Recent data from a week of nationwide checks showed over 35,000 inspections resulting in 7,669 violations, including serious offenses such as driving without a valid license.
