Greece intensifies scooter inspections after two minors critically injured
Two minors are in critical condition in Athens hospitals following separate electric scooter accidents in Tinos and Glyka Nerá. A 14-year-old girl is being treated at the Aglaia Kyriakou Children's Hospital after falling from a scooter in Tinos while riding as a passenger, a practice prohibited by law. A 16-year-old boy is hospitalized at KAT hospital after being struck by a car while riding in Glyka Nerá.
These incidents have prompted the Greek Traffic Police to launch intensive inspections targeting groups of minors using electric scooters. Despite existing laws prohibiting those under 17 from operating these vehicles and requiring helmet use, authorities report that violations remain frequent. Data indicates a significant rise in injuries, with over 150 minors hospitalized due to scooter-related accidents in the first quarter of 2026 alone.
Targeted checks have already commenced in Achaia, and hundreds of inspections were recently conducted across Central Macedonia, resulting in dozens of violations involving electric personal mobility devices and bicycles.
