Greece introduces major reforms to Fisheries Code and agricultural sectors
The Greek Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Thanasis Kavvadas, has presented a comprehensive 77-article bill to the Standing Committee on Production and Trade. The legislation aims to modernize several sectors, most notably through the first significant amendment to the Fisheries Code in 56 years.
Key provisions include the establishment of a new National Fisheries Control System to align with European regulatory frameworks. This system will utilize an upgraded Integrated Fisheries Monitoring System (OSPA) to digitize data regarding licenses, landings, trade, and traceability. Digital licensing procedures are expected to be streamlined from 19 current requirements down to just two.
Beyond fisheries, the bill addresses the digitalization of the Farmers' Register, stricter penalties for animal health violations, and honey traceability. It also includes regulations for aquaculture, meat vocational schools, producer groups, and organic markets.
