Greece introduces new Ethics subject in primary schools
Greek schools are introducing a new 'Ethics' subject for students in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades of primary school. This initiative follows a decision by the Council of State and recommendations from the Institute of Educational Policy to utilize the time previously spent by students who were exempt from religious studies.
The curriculum is designed to foster self-reflection and social awareness. For younger students (3rd grade), the focus is on individuality, emotions, and self-regulation. Fourth graders will explore concepts of courage, responsibility, and justice. Older students (5th grade) will tackle more complex topics including inequality, human rights, and how to live well in a world where others suffer.
Initially, theologians and philologists will be responsible for teaching the subject, and they will receive specialized training to handle the new curriculum. The course is described as having philosophical qualities with overlaps in civic education, covering topics ranging from women's rights to the ethics of Artificial Intelligence.
